How to Keep the Reception Energy High: Tips from an Experienced Wedding DJ
When it comes to your wedding day, the reception is easily one of the most important parts of the night. It's where you'll be dancing, eating, drinking, and spending time with your loved ones. But what can you do to make sure that the energy stays high throughout the night? That’s where I, come in! Here are my tips for keeping the reception energy high:
1. Play a variety of music genres
One of the biggest mistakes that wedding DJs make is to play only one genre of music for the entire night. Or at least they want to. Make sure that you play a variety of music genres to cater to all your guests’ tastes. Remember that your guests come from different walks of life and ages, they have different tastes; so mixing the music will keep everyone happy and engaged!
2. Timing is everything
The timing of each song is important. A good DJ should know when to change the song and when to mix the music. The order and timing of the music should create a natural and flowing rhythm.
Also, keep in mind that the length of songs is important. An overly long song can ruin the momentum that's been built up on the dance floor, while a short song can make it difficult to get into any kind of groove. I’m personally not an advocate of playing the entire song. Ever. Most time I just play a chorus and a verse. Make sure you are timing the songs appropriately to keep everyone dancing and having fun!
3. Call to the dance floor early and often
One effective way to keep the energy level high is to call people onto the dance floor early and often. Some DJs may be okay not talking on the mic. Letting the “music speak”. That’s okay too. But for those of you that are comfortable on the microphone, you can use your voice as a tool to bring people out. The first set is always the hardest to get people out so you can just invite them out. Starting with the bridesmaids and groomsmen, then the bride, the groom, and any couples in attendance, then open the dance floor for everyone!
4. Keep an eye on the crowd
Pay attention to how your guests are reacting to the music. Watch for subtle clues such as tapping feet, nodding heads, and swaying shoulders. Know when to read the crowd for signs of anything other than being totally into the songs you’re playing. Reading the crowd is so key!
5. Provide good sound quality and lighting
This is one component that guests don’t always notice, but poor lighting and sound quality can quickly ruin things. While it’s not my main goal, I try to make sure that my sound system is of the highest quality, and the lighting sets the mood and keeps the party going. Lighting is important because it somehow creates confidence in guests. Especially the shy ones.
Keeping the reception energy high requires a careful balance of things like music variety, timing, crowd interaction, and the right sound and lighting. By following these tips, you can know that your wedding reception will be memorable, energetic, and a night to remember!
