Why You Should Book Your DJ First

Having completed hundreds of sales calls with future clients, I always hear “yeah… we’re almost done booking our vendors so… we’re excited to wrap this thing up!” I get it. Your venue is a big ticket item. Your flowers set the tone. Your photo/video team will preserve the memory. The cake is yummy. In most cases, the DJ doesn't even get mentioned until way later. But why? A topic for another day. However, I’m here to tell you what makes the DJ your secret weapon in your search! Here are my reasons why your DJ should be booked first:

  1. Aside from wedding planners, DJs are the only vendors who communicate with all the other vendors. These relationships are carried far beyond the 4 walls of your reception room! My favorite thing to do is say "I know someone" when a client asks me for recommendations of photographers, videographers, event planners, and even officiants. When you hire a DJ first, you'll have access to dozens of vendors that the DJ works with every year. In any case, even if you don't pick a vendor from your DJ's list, you might get some helpful insights.

  2. Because of my years of experience, I know what venues and caterers to avoid, who to book, and what to look for when booking. It's said that food and music make a wedding memorable. If you book your venue first (as most people do), you're halfway there (sorry, photographers)! The photography is important for preserving the memory, but the food and music keep you in the moment.

  3. Most couples don't consider how competitive some wedding dates can be. You've already booked your dream venue, hired your favorite photographer and videographer, bought a gorgeous cake, and bought your beautiful wedding outfit, but when you're ready to book your entertainment, all the DJ's you come across that you like are booked. What a nightmare! Don't be that person. A better DJ will have less availability, and some DJs charge more when it's closer to your wedding.

    • This is what TheKnot.com says are the most popular wedding dates of 2023, and they all fall on Saturday:

      • Saturday, May 20, 2023

      • Saturday, September 23, 2023

      • Saturday, October 7, 2023

      • Saturday, October 14, 2023

      • Saturday, October 20, 2023

Booking your DJ too late could be a mistake. The entertainment you choose is your secret weapon against the unknown, cranky guests, and the overwhelming planning!
